The Australian Parliament passed new NDIS laws on 19 August 2026. The changes will be introduced gradually, so participants can continue using their current plans and supports while further details and implementation dates are released.

Areas that will change

According to the NDIA, the reforms will affect how people access the Scheme, how plans are created, how funding is used, how providers deliver supports, how fraud is addressed and how NDIS prices are set. Some changes, including updates to plan reassessments and record keeping, began in the weeks following passage of the laws. Changes involving social and community participation funding are expected to phase in from October 2026.

What providers should do now

Providers should rely on current information from the NDIA and the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Internal procedures, forms and staff guidance may need review as new rules and commencement dates are confirmed. Providers should avoid changing services based only on rumours or general commentary, particularly where official guidance says implementation will be gradual.

What workers should know

Workers should continue following current support plans, organisational procedures and the NDIS Code of Conduct. They should complete required records accurately and raise questions with their supervisor when a change may affect a participant’s support. Clear communication will be important as providers update workers and participants over time.

Keep information current

NDIS reforms can develop through legislation, rules and operational guidance. A blog or training resource can become outdated quickly if it is not reviewed. Providers and workers should check official NDIS sources regularly and confirm the date of any information before relying on it.
