People receiving NDIS supports should be able to expect workers who are respectful, capable and focused on the individual’s goals. The NDIS Workforce Capability Framework describes the attitudes, skills and knowledge expected of workers across the sector.

Respect choice and control

Good support starts with listening. Workers need to understand how each person communicates, what matters to them and how they want their support delivered. This includes respecting decisions, privacy, culture, relationships and the right to take reasonable risks. The worker’s role is to support the person to direct their own life, not to make unnecessary decisions for them.

Build a reliable working relationship

Trust develops when workers arrive prepared, follow agreed plans and communicate honestly. A reliable worker understands the boundaries of the role and raises concerns through the correct process. They also recognise when a person’s circumstances or support needs have changed and share relevant information without breaching confidentiality.

Use skills safely

Workers should understand the tasks they are expected to perform and ask for guidance when something is outside their capability. Safe practice includes following support plans, completing accurate records and using equipment or procedures correctly. Providers must match workers to roles carefully and arrange training or supervision where a capability gap exists.

Keep learning from the person

Participants are an important source of knowledge about the quality of their support. Workers and providers should welcome feedback and respond to it respectfully. Regular conversations can identify what is working, what needs to change and whether the support continues to reflect the participant’s goals.

For providers, the Framework can guide job descriptions, recruitment, induction, supervision and training. For workers, it offers a clear picture of the behaviours and capabilities that support quality NDIS services.
